Christians have associated Salvation with water. Therefore, there is an image of the Sea Cross. Religious people have believed human existence resembles stormy water. Paradise on the other hand is a kind of a harbor, a shelter for exhausted souls. The church is a vessel on which you can overcome any daily troubles. In other words, waves of various kinds of danger and height. Paul, the apostle, considered hope as a specific anchor which every Christian need to throw. Because of these sayings the cross just like an anchor, has appeared. In many ways this resemblance is explained by the catch-up-the ear.

What is represented on the cross?

The following images are typical for sea crosses:
  • The Crucifixion;
  • The Holy Trinity;
  • Russian saints, related to navy and the sea;
  • Guardian Angel with weapons and a shield;
  • water-related miracles.
The death of Jesus is depicted in front. This is a copy of an icon created in the fourth century. Unlike many images, the emphasis here is not on the horrors that the Savior experienced before his death, but on his glory and triumph. The image of St. Mitrofan of Voronezh and Arseny Konevetsky is one of the main distinctive features of the Orthodox Sea Cross. Saint Mitrofan strongly supported Peter the Great during the construction of the navy and even made donations to fight the enemies of the Russian Land. Arseny was an ascetic and lived in complete loneliness on an island remote from the rest of the world. He was a great Lenten man and he was able to overcome all the temptations and defects of his soul. Later, he founded the Konevetsky Monastery. That is why Mitrofan and Arseny are the most important Russian patrons of the navy and people whose lives and activities are connected with water. In addition, Arseny helped fishermen in dangerous situations. On the back side of the cross, an Angel is shown overshadowing sailing ships lost in stormy water. Many believe that this is a help symbol to sailors. But the allegory should be understood slightly more extensively. Our lives are nothing but stormy waves that can overwhelm us or make us stronger. It is no less important to overcome passions and dark temptations than to come out alive from the battle with the stormy sea nature Images of miracles can be seen next to the Guardian Angel:
  • walking on the water surface;
  • sailing of Jesus Christ and his apprentices during a storm.
One day, Jesus was sailing through stormy waters with the apostles, and a storm’s began. The Savior drove out the tornado with the help of prayer and divine power.
