How to choose a pectoral cross

A few questions that help to choose a cross for yourself, for a child’s baptism or as a gift.

Who the cross is for

For a child’s baptism a small light cross with smooth edges is best: it does not scratch the skin and does not catch on clothes. An adult may choose a larger cross with more detailed relief.

If the cross is a gift, find out in advance whether the person wears a cross and which form is customary in their tradition. If you are not sure, an icon of their patron saint or a prayer book is a good choice.

Form and image

The most common Orthodox cross is eight-pointed: above the main crossbar there is a short one for the inscription, below it a slanted footrest. Most crosses show the Crucifixion, and many have the words «Save and protect» on the back.

Material

Sterling silver 925 is durable and suits everyday wear. Over time silver darkens, this is normal: how to clean it is described on the silver care page. Gilded crosses are more often chosen as a gift for a memorable day.

Size, chain or cord

A cross should be comfortable in weight and size. For a child a soft cord is usually chosen, for an adult a chain or a cord. Cords and chains are in a separate category.

Consecration

The item card states where the cross was consecrated. If you have any doubts about how to wear and keep a consecrated cross, ask the priest of your parish.
