ABOUT ICONS
How to choose an Orthodox icon for your home or as a gift
For prayer at home, people most often choose icons of Christ and of the Theotokos, such as the Kazan and Vladimir icons, together with an icon of the saint whose name they bear and an icon of the Guardian Angel. A St Nicholas icon is a traditional gift for someone setting out on a journey, and St Spyridon is asked for help in everyday needs.
For a baptism, godparents usually give an icon of the Guardian Angel or of the child's patron saint; for a wedding, icons of Christ and the Theotokos. Small 6.4 x 5 cm icons are easy to take with you when travelling, while 13 x 18 and 21 x 28 cm icons suit an icon corner at home.
Every icon card lists the size and the workshop, and for blessed icons the place where they were blessed. Icons from monastery workshops come with a workshop certificate.
