CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE, JERUSALEM

About the place

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, also called the Church of the Resurrection, stands in the Old City of Jerusalem. It holds the greatest Christian shrines: Golgotha, the place where the Lord Jesus Christ was crucified, and the Holy Sepulchre, the place of His burial and Resurrection.

The first church here was built in the 4th century under Emperor Constantine and Empress Helena. Every year on Great Saturday the Holy Fire descends in the Edicule above the Tomb of the Lord.

The Andcross pilgrimage centre has taken groups to the Holy Land since 2006, and every route begins at the Holy Sepulchre. In 2005 the centre was awarded the medal of the Patriarch of Jerusalem.
