About the place
The Holy Mountain Athos is a peninsula in northern Greece where monks have lived since ancient times. It is home to twenty ruling monasteries, sketes and cells, and the monastic life here has not stopped for more than a thousand years.
The Holy Mountain is venerated as the earthly lot of the Mother of God. The monasteries keep many miraculous icons and relics of saints.
Only men may enter Athos, with a special permit. Women can see the monasteries from the sea on a boat along the coast.
