SVETITSKHOVELI CATHEDRAL
About the place
Svetitskhoveli, the cathedral of Mtskheta, is one of the main churches of Georgia. The present cathedral was built in the 11th century by the architect Arsukisdze on the site of the first church, raised in the 4th century when Georgia was baptised.
According to tradition, the Robe of Christ, brought from Jerusalem, rests beneath the cathedral. Georgian kings are buried in Svetitskhoveli.
The cathedral stands in the centre of Mtskheta, close to Samtavro monastery, where the relics of St Gabriel rest.
