Valaam Transfiguration monastery

The Transfiguration monastery on Lake Ladoga

Valaam is often called the Athos of the North, and pilgrims reach it by boat across Lake Ladoga. Here they pray at the relics of Sts Sergius and Herman, visit the island sketes and hear the famous Valaam chant.

About the place

The Valaam Transfiguration Stauropegial Monastery stands on the island of Valaam in the northern part of Lake Ladoga, in the Republic of Karelia. According to tradition, it was founded by Sts Sergius and Herman of Valaam.

The main shrine of the monastery is the relics of Sts Sergius and Herman, the founders of the Valaam community. The sketes of the monastery are spread across the islands of the archipelago.

The monastery was revived in 1989 and today welcomes pilgrims from all over the world. Our group was on Valaam in June 2019.
